I didn't have my own purchased apps grayed out, but I guess the transfer purchases(Family Purchases) could work for such apps.

At some point before or after this, you will have to turn on Download Apps Automatically from iTUnes-Edit-Preferences-Store-Automatic Downloads-Apps, for the apps to appear in your library and then you can Install them on sync. So go ahead to iTunes-Account-Family Purchases (at first this might show up as Transfer Purchases), found the app in Family library under the respective family member and click the little iCloud icon on the top right corner of the app. When searching for this app in App store, it doesn't recognize as owned and wants you to purchase it.
